Know About Nicolas Cage's Comedy-Horror Movie Renfield

Nicolas Cage has had many ups and downs in his career, but in recent years has made some fantastic films with outstanding performances, from the horror thriller 'Mandy' to the beautiful, completely underrated 'Pig,' and the idea of seeing his version of Dracula has its own appeal; Nicolas Hoult and Awkwafina have proven themselves more and more with each role they take on. I'm less familiar with filmmaker Chris McKay or writers Ryan Ridley and Robert Kirkman, but they all have their own level of notoriety. With that in mind, I've had my eye on 'Renfield" as the first must-see theatrical release of 2023, and perhaps a bit naively got my hopes up. But how is it? Did it live up to the expectations I had built up bit by bit? I'm very happy to say that frankly, it's at least as good, maybe even better. Everyone involved clearly had fun making this film without losing the intention to entertain. And it does that without question, being delightfully over-the-top and fully exploiting the magic of film in its plot development and blend of horror, stylized action and comedy, all in a way that is knowing, smart and sassy. Every component here is simply superb: the wild blood, horror and special makeup, as well as a few choice shots that highlight that garishness; the wonderfully outrageous stunts and practical and special effects; the sharp, intelligent humor that may or may not have anything to do with the core idea, and that is sometimes hilariously and intentionally counterpointed. Hoult and Awkwafina get a chance to show off more of their range and acting skills, and all I can say is that I look forward to seeing both of them in many more roles.

The production design and art direction are excellent throughout, with the decorations of Dracula's lair, the Lobos stronghold, and even Renfield's apartment standing out. The peppy soundtrack is a wonderful complement to Marco Beltrami's solid, if rather ordinary, score and, equally important, very much in keeping with the swinging tone that 'Renfield' strikes. None of this would be possible without a solid backbone, of course, and it's to Kirkman and Ridley's credit that they've done an excellent job of executing what should become of the film. A biting and well thought out exposition takes us right into this great swirl of genres, but with a consistent, somewhat unique and surprising line. The script clearly plays with concepts of abuse, co-dependency and toxic relationships, and does so as a comedy. At the same time, it's also completely sincere, delightfully honest and smart.

And this is where the evaluation begins to lean towards criticism since, while the overcooking and Cinematic Sorcery's deliberate, winking slant does assist all these components to come together well, I don't think it could ever be ideal. All excellent concepts, though maybe a little bit too precise. The entire sequence of events is divided into three distinct acts, with the final act being particularly busy because it pushes every inclusion and idea to its logical conclusion. Sometimes it's a lot to take in. The resolution of all the sections, including the climax and finale, however, is what ultimately matters, regardless of how clever the writing and other artistry are.

This won't appeal to everyone in different ways because it's rife with severe violence and discusses trauma emphatically even though it does it subtly. Additionally, it's perhaps important to point out that the movie does, in some ways, adhere to the vampire legend. But as long as none of these things pose a problem, I'd have no problem recommending this movie to just about everyone. It's entertaining, witty, well-made in every way, and most importantly, it's a tonne of fun from beginning to end. Once more, I had high expectations, and I'm so happy that they were all met or even exceeded in full. "Renfield" is a fabulously enjoyable time, and I wholeheartedly suggest it!
