The story takes place in the southern California city of Arcadia and follows Jim Lake Jr. and his trials and tribulations after he was chosen as an amulet to become the next powerful troll hunter, protector of the human world. He was joined by his best friend Toby, and mentors Blinky and Arrrg. Jim struggles to learn how to be a Troll Hunter and balance his new personality with his current one. The guy is also helped in his adventures: Draal, the son of Jim's predecessor, Kanjigar, and Claire, a cheerful teenage girl for whom the hero has romantic feelings. The first villain the boy encounters is Mr. Strickler, an antagonist who seeks power for himself, however, finds himself in conflict over a connection with Jim's mother, Barbara. Other antagonists include the fearsome Angor Roth, Bular, son of the troll leader of the Dark Lands, and Gunmar, the powerful foe and the aforementioned ruler of the Dark Lands. In the end, Jim turns out to be a vulnerable hero who is insecure about himself and his ability to live up to his new destiny, like the first human troll hunter. Sometimes a guy is defeated and shows that he is afraid of responsibility, as well as whether he can win when the time comes to face Gunmar.
